Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle

In my opinion, there are two types of stupid teenage-blokey politically-incorrect type of movies. On one hand, you have one littered with nude scenes, sexual innuendos and plenty of try-hard-to-be-funny scenes (eg. Scary Movie series). On the other hand, you've got one that's actually very very very funny (eg. American Pie, South Park Movie). Fortunately, Harold & Kumar falls into the latter category.

From the producers of 'Dude, Where's My Car?', comes 'Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle'. If you've watched Dude, Where's My Car - Harold & Kumar is actually very similar in the sense that it featured two underdogs who happen to be good pals, set out for something seemingly very simple, but get side-tracked so much that the whole movie turns into a very entertaining adventure.

The one thing that sets it apart from its predecessor engages the audience in the sense that you feel for Harold & Kumar. The stereotype that they experienced is probably true. Its also a feel good movie with ...

The Manchurian Candidate

This thriller stars, in my opinion, one of the most talented actors Denzel Washington as a Gulf War veteran trying to uncover the truth behind his former team-mate, who is now a vice-presidential candidate.

I sometimes make the mistake of picking a movie to watch because it stars my favourite actor/actresses. Examples include Anthony Hopkins, brilliant as Hannibal Lecter in those series, but unbearable in the very forgettable 'The Human Stain'. Denzel Washington was fantastic in John Q, but unengaging in The Manchurian Candidate. I don't blame the actors/actresses for their failure though, since it isn't really a good story to start with.

Mind-control is the central theme here. Its something that you expect to see in sci-fi movies and cartoons, but the producers have put in a modern day context here, hoping to achieve some X-Files like paranormal atmosphere. The movie failed miserably in that area. In many parts of the movie, you can feel like the story seems to be dragging a lit...

The Notebook

This romance movie stars that girl from Mean Girls (Rachel McAdams) and that guy from Hercules (Ryan Gosling). Billed as a tearjerker, I'm sorry to say I did not waste a single tear. The only thing I've wasted unfortunately is my time.

For a romance movie, it spends surprisingly little time building up the reason why two people are in love. As such, its kinda hard for the audience to empathise with the two leading characters. Eventually as the show progresses, you'll feel like you don't care about them anymore.

It has all the elements of a standard romance movie. Two people falling in love, encounter some sort of opposition, overcame obstacles, and continued falling in love. If you do not mind a standard run-of-the-mill love story, then this maybe a show for you.

Overall, The Notebook is a nice and warm movie, but does not engage the audience well enough to make it entertaining. 2 Stars - and both of them for the delightful eye candy Rachel McAdams.
